Remembering British photojournalist Tom Hurndall who died 22 years ago today. He had been in a coma for 9 months after being shot in the head by an Israeli military sniper as he tried to rescue children from the line of gunfire in Gaza. Love and respect always. #RIPTomHurndall

Chair @SarahChampionMP has written with concern to Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP over the Israeli Government’s treatment of @UNRWA and other INGOs, which run a range of services for Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Trump’s coup in Venezuela didn’t just break the rules – it showed there aren’t any. We’ll all regret that | Nesrine Malik

An illegal military strike on Saturday followed by claims that the USA will “run” Venezuela.
Now a renewed threat to seize Greenland over the heads of its people.
When will our leaders here in the UK stop prevaricating and stand up for international law?

Crematorium Planning Application – New Inns Lane, Frankley

C

I wanted to write and update residents about what is proving to be a long line of smears being put about both on social media and in the Bromsgrove Standard newspaper by a Tory Candidate in Northfield. This time it’s an allegation from the Conservative candidate that that local Labour Councillors and the local MP (I’m assuming she is having a go at me rather than the Conservative MP for …

Solidarity – A View from South of the Border

S

As the Referendum on Scottish Independence has got closer, the words “solidarity” and “self- determination” have come into my head time and time again. I guess like many on the Left in England, for a long time I reckoned my commitment to principle of self-determination meant that I should hold back. Surely, I thought, independence was a matter for people in Scotland to decide, not something for …

Voting against the Bedroom Tax

V

I’ve been contacted by many local people who have told me that they are struggling to cope with the hated bedroom tax, introduced by the Tories and Liberal Democrats in Westminster. The Bedroom Tax is affecting over 13,000 households in Birmingham and over 1300 in the Northfield area alone. People receiving housing benefit, who live in council or housing association homes with a spare bedroom …

That Tory Charity Problem

T

What is it with Conservative politicians and charities? This week, new Tory Minister for Civil Society, Brooks Newmark, provoked outrage by telling charities to "stick to their knitting" and keep out of politics. The tone was about as patronising as you could get. The use of language was nothing short of insulting when referring to organisations which span the spectrum from providing emergency …

Local Concern about Sainsburys Plans in Kings Norton

L

Today I have written to Sainsburys to flag a range of serious concerns about their proposal to build a new store in the car park of the Navigation Inn in Kings Norton, at the junction of Wharf Road and Pershore Road. Last night a public meeting held in Kings Norton also expressed real worries about the construction of the proposed Sainsburys store on the Navigation Car park. Although my duties in …

Following the drop-in consultation days which took place at the Hollymoor Centre in July, Bloor Homes have now published a Newsletter about their impressions from those days, and what they plan to do from here. You can read the Newsletter here. Evidence to Council Inquiry into Green Waste Collection Service.

Birmingham City Council have invited me to submit my thoughts to the Connectivity & Sustainability Overview and Scrutiny Committee’s Inquiry into the Green Waste Collection Service. I have been raising concerns about the changes to the green waste collection service with the City Council since early this year. I have therefore been grateful for the opportunity to submit my comments …

Local Mums Invited to Join Discussion with Labour MP’s Richard Burden & Gisela Stuart

L

Alongside the Labour MP for BirminghamEdgbaston, Gisela Stuart, I'm inviting local mums to join a discussion group at ASDA in Barnes Hill between 1pm and 2.30pm on Friday 5th September.

The discussion is part of Asda’s ‘Mumdex’ project, which allows mums talk about an issue that is having an increasingly significant impact on family life – the rising costs of living.

Fly Tipping in Longbridge

F

This alleyway in Longbridge became a dumping ground for old fridges and a lot of other things and was a safety hazard, particularly for local children. I was pleased to work with local Labour Councillor, Andy Cartwright to get it cleared this week. You can see some “before and after” photos here. Fly-tipping of rubbish, whether of old fridges, household rubbish or garden waste is …

Humanitarian disaster in Northern Iraq

H

Nobody can fail to have been affected by the TV images that we have seen of Yazidis stranded without shelter on Mount Sinjar in Northern Iraq. The brutal persecution of Yezidis, Christians, Shia Turkmen and other minorities by The Islamic State Group (formerly known as ISIS) is nothing short of horrific. So too is the totalitarian rule they are imposing on the areas they currently control. A …

Reaction to Ceasefire Breakdown – Richard Burden MP

R

Responding to the expiry of the ceasefire on the 8 August 2014 Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Britain-Palestine Richard Burden MP said:  “The expiry of the latest ceasefire means that civilians will once again be those who will suffer most. Those in Israel will again take to shelters from rockets, and those in Gaza will again have nowhere to go which is safe from missiles and …
