Statement in response to the submission of the Financial Reporting Council’s (FRC) report to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP

S

“The FRC operates under a specific remit. They obviously have to act in accordance with that.

“It is significant, however, that the FRC also says that there are further issues for the Dti to consider. It is vital that the Dti acts on this and, from my own discussions with ministers, I have no doubt that they would wish to do so. The Dti has the power to order further official enquiries and I am urging Alan Johnson to do whatever is necessary to achieve the following two things:

1. to establish the full facts about events leading up to the collapse of MG Rover;

2. to make sure that these facts are made available to the public.

“The collapse of MG Rover is of huge importance to my constituents in Birmingham Northfield. MG Rover workers who have lost their jobs, together with suppliers and others who have also lost a great deal, deserve a full explanation of what has happened. We all need to make sure we do everything we can to ensure that this happens.”
