Boundary Review

bce-northfield-proposals

The Boundary Commission published their proposals for changes to Parliamentary constituency boundaries in England. Under these proposals, Birmingham would be set to lose one Parliamentary seat overall. There would still be a constituency called Birmingham Northfield, but it would be very different to the current one. Read more

COUNT THEM IN – ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

201609-british-legion-2

Last week it was a pleasure to declare my support for the Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland’s ‘Count Them In’ campaign. This calls for questions on the Armed Forces community to be included in the next UK census.

There are over 6 million members of this community in the UK, but little is known about their exact numbers, location and needs. It is important that we know these statistics so that public bodies, local authorities, charities and the government are able to deliver the best services and support they can.

You can find out more about this campaign or sign up here: www.britishlegion.org.uk/census and using #CountThemIn

CARERS WEEK 2016

201606 Carers Week

#Toryporkies in Northfield 2016 – have a look at this scare story being peddled in Conservative leaflet going out in Northfield at the moment and then read on for the truth.

Anyone in the Northfield area remember Conservative campaign here during the General Election last year?

Remember the candidate who spent a fortune claiming to have made Kings Norton her home and how much she loved the area – but who was not seen for dust afterwards?

Remember the stories which the Conservatives put around trying to scare people into believing that Northfield was going to lose its swimming pool – when in reality Northfield was going to get a new pool built?
Remember the Tory scare stories telling you that the Council was going to switch off street lights in Longbridge when it was simply not true? Read more

Government’s new “anti-boycott” rules are undermining our democracy

On Tuesday (15 March) I held a debate in Parliament calling on the Government to speak the truth on new anti-boycott rules which many fear represent an unprecedented attack on democracy.

The rules, announced last month, by a Government minister during a visit to Israel – without any parliamentary or public scrutiny – aim to ban public bodies including local councils and universities from refusing to award contracts to certain companies on ethical grounds.
