Real elation that every living Israeli hostage is now free. Even one still held would have continued the nightmare. It carries on for many Palestinians Israel has abducted. I wrote about Dr Husam Abu Safiya in February . Why is he still in captivity?

Israeli forces are said to have dropped more explosives on Gaza than fell on London, Dresden and Hamburg combined in the Second World War. The level of destruction is hard to fathom as is the humanitarian suffering.

Letter to Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council

L

I have been raising concerns about the changes to the green waste collection service with the City Council since early this year. In September I submitted evidence to Birmingham City Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee’s Inquiry into the Green Waste Collection Service – calling for a suspension of the charge. You can read the inquiry’s report here. In the meantime …

Publication of the Kerslake Review

P

Responding to the Publication of the Kerslake Review on the 9 December 2014, Labour MP for Birmingham Northfield, Richard Burden MP said: “As Sir Bob Kerslake says, we Brummies have pride and passion in our City. He is also right to identify serious problems – in relation to the strategic management of the City, its approach to partnership working and in the extent to which local people have a …

The Green Post Office

T

I wanted to update residents on upcoming changes to the Post Office on Kings Norton Green.I have received this letter from the Post Office Ltd, which sets out details of how the branch is to be modernise in 2015 – including with  longer opening hours and new products and services. The refurbishment will mean that the branch is closed from Tuesday 6 January at 5.30pm, and will open again on …

Come and support local businesses this Saturday

C

This Saturday 6th December marks the second Small Business Saturday. After the campaign’s success last year, I’m pleased to be supporting the vital contribution small businesses make to our community in 2014. Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that started in the USA. It encourages people to shop locally and support small and independent businesses in the local community, helping …

The Tories’ economic record is one of repeated broken promises

T

If the consequences for people here in Birmingham were not so serious, it might even have been funny. On Wednesday, Conservative Chancellor George Osborne came to the House of Commons to make all sorts of boastful claims about the way he has managed the economy. From the arrogance of his tone you might have thought he expected spontaneous applause from a grateful public to break out across the …

The Government fails to act on the ‘zero zero economy’

T

A number of local people have come to me raising concerns about the way in which Jobseeker’s Plus has been issuing sanctions for those claiming out of work benefits. The Government introduced these sanctions in 2010. The aim is to make people claiming Jobseeker’s ‘see the consequences of their actions’. Sanctions can last for 4, 13, 26 weeks – and even up to three years and are issued if people …

Northfield’s District Convention

N

I had the privilege of giving the closing speech of Northfield’s District Convention on Saturday. It had been a very successful event with a good attendance from community groups and organisations across the area. With the theme of “Making a Difference in your Community” the Convention heard thought provoking contributions from Paul Slatter of the Chamberlain Forum and Barbara …

The Conservatives and Bournville College, “Nothing to do with us Gov. Blame everyone else”

T

Next week I will be meeting the Chair and Acting Principal of Bournville College to run through the financial and strategic issues they are facing. We will be discussing what needs to be done to safeguard opportunities for young people in the South Birmingham area and beyond, and to build a secure future for the college itself – a keystone of the redevelopment of the Longbridge area. I don’t want …

Parking Outside the Bull’s Head, Kings Norton Green

P

I was very concerned to see, via Facebook, that parking charges were introduced late last week for the parking spaces available outside the Bull’s Head pub on Kings Norton Green. A number of local residents had been ticketed as they had parked there without realising that these charges had been introduced, and that they were subject to a fine of £50. I raised the issue with Birmingham City …

Update on Bournville College

U

Responding to reports in the media about Bournville College in Longbridge, Richard Burden MP said: “I am very concerned about the news of the cuts being faced by Bournville College. Bournville is not only hugely important to expanding apprenticeships and providing young people with the skills and opportunities they deserve. It is also a cornerstone of the regeneration of the Longbridge area …
