Local Healthwatch Network welcome Government confirmation that the independent voice of the public will be saved

Local Healthwatch have welcomed today’s announcement by Ministers that they will not be proceeding with plans to abolish either the Healthwatch network of local patients and public watchdogs or Healthwatch England nationally.

Richard Burden, Chair of Healthwatch Birmingham & Solihull and Parliamentary Engagement Coordinator of Local Healthwatch Working Together, said today:

“Ministers deserve great respect for listening to the overwhelming evidence they have received about the importance of safeguarding the right of the public to an independent voice in shaping the health and social care services on which they rely.

“Today’s announcement gives us the opportunity to build on the best of what Healthwatch has achieved locally and nationally, and to spread best practice to all parts of the country.

“The past year has been a period of huge uncertainty for Healthwatch staff and volunteers. The loyalty and dedication they have shown during such a difficult time has been awesome. In paying tribute to them, today’s announcement enables us all to face the future with confidence.

“It is a great day for patients and the public.”
