What people are saying about the EU
“We believe that leaving the EU would deter investment and threaten jobs. It would put the economy at risk. Britain will be stronger, safer and better off remaining a member of the European Union.”
– Ralph Speth, Chief Executive, Jaguar Land Rover

“The potential consequences of a UK exit – or Brexit – are twofold for domestic pension schemes. A break from the block would affect the UK gilt and equity markets. There are worries that it would drive foreign direct investment (FDI) out of the country.”

“Our students are taught by the best minds from across Europe… [Leaving the EU] would undermine the UK’s position as a global leader in science and the arts.”
– Sir David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor, University of Birmingham
Extending Air Strikes in Syria
By now, you will probably know that the House of Commons voted 397 votes to 223 in favour of extending UK participation in air strikes against ISIL/Daesh to Syria.
As I am sure you can appreciate, I have received hundreds of e-mails and other communications about this issue and I have done my best to keep constituents up to date with my thoughts through email replies, via social media and on my website.
I gave the issue a great deal of thought and I concluded that I should vote against the extension of air strikes.
Get Involved
Join the local party and help shape Labour’s future.
If you were one of the 17,000+ local voters who supported my re-election, from a £1 a year you can become a Labour member.
Everyone who has been involved in the last few weeks knows there was a real buzz about our successful campaign here in Birmingham Northfield and that there was a real sense of shared purpose.
Across the country, 21,000 more people have joined Labour since the results of the General Election became known last Friday. They know the threat which 5 more years of Tory Government poses to everyday people means an effective opposition is needed today more than ever.
By joining our local Labour Party here in Longbridge, Kings Norton, Northfield and Weoley, you can be part of making that happen and have a say in shaping Labour’s future.
So please, if you believe in a fairer society, don’t just get angry about what the damage the Tories are going to do. Get involved to help us hold them to account.
Read my Summer Update!
It has been a busy month in Westminster before MP’s left Westminster for the Parliamentary recess.
This July I have launched new project to tackle youth employment, been campaigning against the scandals of rip-off telephone rates and pay day loans, and revealing some shocking truths about the Government’s policy on arms exports. It was also a month that saw another development in the drama of MG Rover – Deloitte lost it’s appeal in the Tribunal investigating it’s corporate advice to the “Phoenix Four.”
Looking to the future, I have also been pleased to welcome a number of new regeneration projects in our area. From the new Sainsbury’s at Longbridge, to over 100 homes in King’s Norton, and the success of Northfield’s very own beach, the sun has certainly been shining in South West Birmingham over the past month!
