Animal Welfare Round-up Issue #1
This is my inaugural animal welfare round-up where I will regularly update you on some of the animal causes I have been campaigning on.
I am regularly in contact with many local people regarding issues of animal welfare. I believe strongly that there is no place in a civilised society for animal cruelty and often raise these concerns with the UK Government.
Labour’s animal welfare pledges
This weekend saw Birmingham host Crufts’ Dog Show, and with a large number of constituents regularly getting in touch about animal welfare, when better to share Labour’s animal welfare commitments!
Charlie told me to back Harvey’s Law!
Yesterday, I was delighted to represent the Labour Front Bench in a debate on Harvey’s Law.
As Labour’s Shadow Roads Minister, I was pleased to help the campaigners from “Harvey’s Army” to secure a commitment from the Minister so all Highways England contracts will reintroduce mandatory procedures for scanning and logging dogs found run over on motorways and other roads that they manage.
As the proud owner of Charlie the cat (see photos!), a survivor of a road collision, it was also great that the Minister confirmed that the procedures will be applied to cats as well. Local authorities will also be encouraged to follow best practice regarding pets run over on roads which they control.
Back the ban
This week I joined fellow Labour MPs to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the ban on fox hunting.
It is now five years since the Fox-Hunting Bill received Royal Assent, ending the cruel practice of hunting with dogs. In that time, dozens of prosecutions have been brought under the Act, showing that this ban is making a real difference. Read more
